Golf team no more: The end of a Dana Hall sport

A driving range, a putt, an iron, a swing. These used to be words thrown around by Dana Hall athletes, but golf is no longer offered at Dana Hall.

The golf team had its last season in spring 2015, after losing their home course at the Brae Burn Country Club in Newton. According to Mr. John Suby, the Director of Dana Hall Athletics, Health, and Wellness, the beginning of the end of the golf team was when they lost the Brae Burn Country Club as their practicing course. “Our girls wouldn’t get back on campus until 7 or 7:30. It was just a long way,” Mr. Suby said about having to travel to faraway courses after losing their home course.

Because of how late the team got back from each practice, the numbers of girls wanting to join the team went down significantly, according to Mr. Suby. Moreover, there are only two schools in Dana Hall’s league who had all-girls golf teams at the time: Newton Country Day School and Portsmouth Abbey. With the low numbers of interested girls, difficulty finding a nearby course to practice on, and only two schools to compete against, Dana Hall decided to disband its golf team.

When asked if the golf team would make a reappearance in the upcoming years, Mr. Suby responded with “I don’t think so, it is extremely unlikely. No.”

Brooke Kennedy ’16 was on the golf team starting her freshman year up until it ended in her junior year. “I think being able to relax and get away from the pressure of school was my favorite part of being on the team. Golf is such a relaxing sport, and it was nice to not only get a break from school but to still be on a competitive sports team, which was something I absolutely loved in high school,” Kennedy says of her time on the team.
