“Going tiny”: A new lifestyle

“Tiny houses” are all the rage. What is a tiny house, you ask? A typical tiny house is about 13.5 feet tall, 8.5 feet wide, and 40 feet long. While these dimensions are extremely small, amenities such as bathrooms (including showers and bathtubs), fully applianced kitchens, living spaces and at least one bedroom are included in almost every tiny house.

While living in a house this tiny may seem absolutely crazy to some, to others it is the perfect option. A lot of people want to purchase a tiny house to attach to their cars so they can travel cross country with their home, while others want to save money, and some just like living tiny because they feel as though they don’t need all of the extra material things in their homes.

As an avid Netflix watcher, I have stumbled upon two shows and one documentary about tiny houses: Tiny House Hunters, Tiny House Builders, and Small Is Beautiful: A Tiny House Documentary. I enjoy these shows so much because it makes it seem as though real live people are searching for a doll house to live in. While tiny houses are cute, I don’t think I could ever live in one, so watching other people do it is a way for me to almost live through them.

Here’s the ranking of these shows from my least favorite to favorite:

  • My least favorite of the three is Small Is Beautiful: A Tiny House Documentary. This documentary follows four different people who want to change their lives by “going tiny” — a popular saying by many people who opt to move into tiny homes. While the documentary informed viewers of four different reasons people have decided to go tiny, the two-hour documentary went on for too long and began to get repetitive. While I did enjoy the documentary well enough, if you are looking for a shorter show or program to just learn about tiny houses, I would not recommend this show. 3/5 stars.
  • My second favorite of the shows is Tiny House Builders, a show on Netflix that unfortunately only has three, 45-minute episodes available. Fear not, however, because Netflix plans on adding more episodes of Tiny House Builders in the near future. It is an intense, documentary-style show that follows a team of architects who build tiny houses with a deadline of four days. I really enjoy this show because it shows the real struggle behind creating all of the right dimensional materials that will fit in a tiny house, and in a short amount of time. I would recommend this show if you are interested in architecture, or just the way tiny houses are built! 4.5/5 stars.
  • My favorite of the three tiny house shows has to be Tiny House Hunters. The first season of this show can be found on Netflix, and the rest of it can be found on HGTV. If you are a lover of house hunting shows or home decorating, this is definitely a show for you. Each episode is only 22 minutes long and takes you on the journey of buying and decorating tiny homes. This show is fun, lighthearted, but also interesting. Tiny House Hunters is what really got me interested in the idea of tiny houses. If you are looking for a show that is light hearted and short, this is seriously the show for you. 5/5 stars.
