If you are looking for a new reformer class or a 105 degree intense yoga class, Down Under is the perfect workout studio for you. This spring, Down Under opened their eighth location, at 159 Linden St. Wellesley. Down Under offers yoga classes, Pilates reform workouts, and strength training on mats.

I have tried their Yoga Sculpt and their Hot Power Flow and have been overall impressed. I was hesitant to try their Hot Power Flow because many yoga places will not turn up their heat, despite the purpose being to sweat. During their opening weekend they offered free classes, and I took one and was very pleased. Compared to other workout classes in Wellesley, I enjoyed how the room was set to 103 degrees and the yoga poses were challenging.

I recommend trying evening classes if you are looking for a class with fewer people rather than weekend morning ones. I once attended a Hot Power Flow class Sunday morning, and it was uncomfortably packed. The instructor said their yoga room could fit up to 75 people and I was concerned that they don’t limit the amount of people who can take the class. However, afternoon and evening classes are usually around 5-15 people max which is much more comfortable.

If you are looking for more of a strength training workout with a little heat I recommend the Yoga Sculpt. I was expecting a similar workout to places who offer Yoga Sculpt like Core Power. Despite this expectation, I was a little disappointed because on the website it said the room was around 95 degrees and then during the class, the yoga instructor said it would only be lightly heated. Down Under Yoga Sculpt classes in other locations such as Newton always have their room set around 95 degrees, which also confused me why Wellesley did not. I then tried the class a couple of more times and they continued with this light heat. Although the class still challenges you with strength training, I would prefer it to be heated.

One of my favorite aspects of Down Under is how sanitary and organized the facility is. Compared to other yoga facilities that offer rent mats shared blocks, they make sure that everything is sanitized. They offer sprays and towels in their room for people to clean off all their utilities, which many other studios do not. Also, their bathrooms are extremely nice with showers, hygiene products, and many individual bathrooms offered.

Despite taking a Hot Power Flow class up to three times a week, I am always impressed with how every class feels different. I have taken a class with five different instructors, all learning new skills from them. Some classes have a strong focus on balance, others form, and some fast movements. I have never taken a class where I can predict every move and pace I am going to do. Many Pilates classes, despite their intensity, can repeat the same transitions and moves, which can become predictable. However with this class, I find my mind and body always being challenged with something new.

Right when you walk in the atmosphere it is extremely calming. There are open windows allowing daylight to come in and light hardwood floors and walls. The vibe feels very zen and light. The instructors all have different personalities, however they all require you to put a pin on your mat if you would want hands on modifications, which is helpful for you to communicate if you don’t want to be touched without having to awkwardly communicate that. Overall, the facilities and instructors offer a very safe and calming environment.

I strongly recommend trying Down Under due to all of the workout and yoga classes it offers. There are many passes and trials that will also limit the cost of the classes to new customers. For only $49, you can take unlimited mat classes for four weeks. From reformers, to yoga, to intense strength training, Down Under offers a great workout for everyone.
